Sandpeople

Sapient would be such a nerd if he wasn’t so god damn cool.  I mean dude just has an attitude that is equal parts ‘fuck the world’ and ‘I love everybody’.  Seriously one of the absolute nicest and most respectful emcees that I have ever met.  And when it comes to his music honesty is the game he plays and he has no qualms about talking about the REAL life that he is living.  No gimmicks or tall tales leak into his rhyme schemes.  Interesting how you can still grab a fanbase talking about the day to day things that most of us are going through instead of drawing up these crazy imaginary lifestyles that not only is nobody actually living but nobody can relate to either.  When it comes down to it Sapient is a family man who is just struggling to find himself in the world and make sense of his existence.  I find myself in that same boat so his music definitely appeals to me and leaves me feeling like I have a friend out in Portland who understands my plight.

Sapient – ‘Make More’

Sapient – ‘My Grind is Tech’

Cali isn’t the only state that is reppin good westcoast hip hop these days.  Portland is making itself known in great part from the work of the Sandpeople collective.  Debaser is a shoot-off of two members of the Sandpeople, Sapient & Ethic.  Sapient’s beats support the idea that sometimes simple is better.  He doesn’t go overboard adding 100′s of crazy sound effects to his beats and yet you will hear one of his tracks and it will make you want to listen to it over and over again.  Ethic & Sapient maintain a good sense of humor throughout this album while they clown on wannabe wack rappers, promiscuous women & human neurosis.

Debaser – ‘ Don’t Sleep ft. The Grouch’

Sandpeople are a ten member hip hop collective out of Portland.  They came out a couple of years ago and are slowly creating a name for themselves.  I personally love Sapients beats, mad skills on the production tip.  That is what attracted me to them in the first place but it turns out they have quite a presence on the emcee level as well.  They have a knack for creating layers and layers of hip hop goodness.  Put these people on your radar if you have yet to do so.
