Pep Love

I remember this being one of the first underground albums that I listened to that took me away from the world and placed me temporarily into a much better reality.  One thing I love about hip hop and music in general is that it is a perfect escapism tool.  For better or worse sometimes we just need to get away from life and pretend that a more pleasant parallel universe exists.  This album much like others from the Living Legends crew serves as a lesson in westcoast hip hop 101.  Eligh and The Grouch represent qualities that I think almost any hip hop fan can respect whether you are someone who values insightful and thoughtful lyrics or if you have a beats, beats, beats mentality.  They prove that you don’t have to be dumb to have a song that bumps and you don’t have to be a nerd to be smart.  Sometimes nice guys do in fact finish first.

The Grouch & Eligh – ‘Moments Like This ft. Sunspot Jonz’

I often hear people complain about underground hip hop by saying that the rappers use too big of words and act like intellectual elitists.  Well you know what? I think this attitude is pretty indicative of a dumbass haha.  No but really Pep Love is intelligent and yes he uses lots of big words, all in a row sometimes ;-) , but if you are patient enough to really pay attention to what he is saying, he is saying some really impressive shit.  And if you already like big words then holy moly Pep is gonna be your new favorite wordsmith.  His spiritual views of the world are so refreshing and uplifting and yet he maintains that raw hip hop edge that is a must for any great emcee.

Sometimes its rough for people who come out of large collectives, such as the Hieroglyphics, to gain any amount of solo appeal.  But Pep manages to shine when the spotlight is solely on him.  I often listen Ascension when I am looking for some worldly wisdom and something inspirational that can bring me out of a funk.  If you like Ascension its definitely worth checking out Ascension Side C also.  Side C is a bit more raw, dark and grimy than Ascension but both deserve prime real-estate in your music library.

Okay I know I say this a lot but this album is definitely one of my top five favorite albums of all time.  It’s not just songs it’s a whole experience.  Sometimes you get a bunch of raw talent together and things can go awry.  Too much struggle for creative control.  But LL has somehow figured out a way to manage the production of dope music without letting their ego’s get in the way (At least long enough to drop a few dope albums).  And without a doubt they are one of the absolute best groups to see live.  The energy created at their shows is unlike any I’ve ever seen.  ’Almost Famous’ is one of those albums that you don’t skip any songs because they are all that good, plus they all flow together so well.  Using all kinds of crazy samples from Jefferson Airplane to Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, imagination is not lacking here.  Right alongside with Hieroglyphics, LL has created and formed the mold of underground hip hop in the west-coast.  And best believe these guys have formed a fan-base worldwide.  I think the main reason I appreciate their work is because they totally have their own style, they don’t sound like anyone else.  Completely refreshing in an era full of fake fucks haha.  And definitely check out all their albums because there is more good stuff where this came from.
