Asheru

If you like jazzhop then this album is all you.  Their beats are so dope, upbeat and beautiful.  Honestly its not everyday that you describe a hip hop beat as beautiful but it fits the essence of this album well.  This is their debut album right here and is so good for chilling out and putting yourself in a good mood.  There are a lot of decent features on here such as Little Brother, Asheru & The Procussions plus there are a bunch of real tight instrumentals throughout.  If you like this I would definitely check out ‘True Indeed’ also which is Surreal & The Sound Providers.  Lots of good material between the two.

Production: Jason Skills, Soulo

Features: Asheru, Little Brother, Maspyke, Soulo, The Procussions, Wee Bee Foolish

Label: ABB Records

Sound Providers – ‘ Autumns Evening Breeze’

Sound Providers – ‘Braggin & Boastin ft. Little Brother’

This album will take you to a different world.  It’s like an audible cloud that lets you float far and away into a distant land.  Kenn Starr’s gentle but strong presence lends well to the whimsical, ethereal beats provided by the likes of Oddisee/Kev Brown/Illmind etc.  His lyrics are so real but are portrayed with a delicate poetic nature.  This album reminds me a bit of Blu & Exile – ‘Below the Heavens’.  It’s like you take a mini vacation when you listen to albums like these.  This album came out a few years ago (2006) but its a mainstay on my playlist.  And even though Kenn Starr isn’t the most well-known cat around, he is extremely well-received by the underground.

Production:  DJ Roddy Rod, Illmind, Kev Brown, Khrysis, M-Phazes, Oddisee, Young Cee

Features:  Asheru, Chronkite, Darien Brockington, Kev Brown, M-Phazes, Median, Oddisee, Sean Born, Supastition, Talib Kweli, Wayna

Label:  Halftooth Records

Kenn Starr – ‘If (ft. Asheru & Talib Kweli)

Who says all good hip hop is made by Americans?  Here are three French beat-makers that prove otherwise.  This album is the epitome of jazz-hop.  Dazzling jazz inspired beats mixed impecably with verses from skilled emcees such as Asheru, Apani B Fly, Sadat X & Raashan Ahmad.  This album kinda blew my mind when I first heard it.  I am honestly astounded that they aren’t more well known because their insane amount of talent soars over many in the game right now.  I think this is an album that can be enjoyed across the spectrum of hip hop fans.

Production:  DJ Damage, Dusty, Madhi

Features:  Apani B Fly, Asheru, Buckshot, Fat Lip, J-Live, J. Sands, Lizz Fields, Raashan Ahmad, Sadat X, Soul Clan, Stacy Epps, T. Love, Tableed, Tre Hardson

Label:  KIF Records
